Fifty years!?! How did that happen?? Mostly I feel surprised. And grateful.
I have lived in Seattle in the 1960's. Then in Iowa. Then for four years in Atlanta, Georgia. My husband worked for the Center for Disease Control in the area of cancer research. We have recently retired to Grinnel.
At age 30 I started nursing school. That had been my dream from childhood. I started with LPN, then RN, then at age 50 I completed my BS degree. I started working on my Masters, but it stopped being fun and interferred with my life too much, so I figured enough already!
The most meaningful phase of my career was nursing in Oncology, in the late 70's and 80's, when the specialty was new. After about 10 years, I changed to the Nursery Intensive Care Unit. I finished my career working with cancer research. I worked with patients, and sometimes thought, "I can't believe I get paid to do this job" because I liked doing it so much.
My husband Ryan. It's been almost 30 years! With both of us retired, it's a good thing we still like each other. Because it's a lot of togetherness. Sometimes I listen to us and we are nattering like two old people! I smile and feel grateful. I think each day is a gift. Even the bad ones.
I advise our grandchildren to go to school first before having children. For me, I think the best part of having children first is you get to see how they turned out for more years. Only, how did they get to be middle aged???
